The Alexander von Humboldt Professorship addresses foreign researchers that are world leaders in their field. Researchers that are producing state of the art academic publications that are expected to shape Germany’s international competitiveness on the long term are eligible for nomination.

The award funds, usually totalling 3,5-5 Million EUR, are granted for a period of five years. This evaluation covers the period 2008 – 2015 and refers to 50 award winners, and is based on qualitative and quantitative methods such as case studies, interviews, bibliometric analyses and an online surveys.

The results of this study demonstrate that this programme promotes and strengthens internationality and top-level research at research institutions in Germany thanks to the flexibility it allows in the use of funds, its clear focus, efficient processing, and well proportioned budget and duration.
