Paul Butschbacher is an analyst in the Technopolis office in Vienna, with a focus on Green Economy. He has an academic background in socio-ecological economics and experience in public sector consulting as well as geopolitical and governmental affairs advisory. Prior to joining Technopolis Group, Paul worked one year for the Austrian Federal Ministry for Climate Action, the Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK). In the Crisis Management Unit, his focus was on natural gas-related topics such as participation in the Gas Coordination Group of the European Commission (DG ENER). He also gained international experience working for the consultancy arm of the German Institute for Economic Research, Berlin Global Advisors and Deloitte. He contributed to projects regarding the German market entry strategy for a Chinese EV manufacturer, digitisation in the public sector as well as studies on occupational health in the care sector or the evidence base on transfer of business in Europe (DG GROW).

Paul graduated from the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU) with a master’s degree in socio-ecological economics and policy (SEEP). In his thesis, he used multilevel modelling to examine the effects of economic segregation on the perceived inequality of opportunity in the USA. During his studies, he acquired strong skills in both qualitative and quantitative research methods and spent a semester as a research scholar at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He also holds a bachelor’s degree in economics. During his undergraduate studies, he analysed the efficiency and effectiveness of Germany’s planned emissions trading scheme in his thesis and spent one semester abroad at the Copenhagen Business School (CBS). He is fluent in German and advanced in English.
