{"id":18725,"date":"2020-02-17T14:19:42","date_gmt":"2020-02-17T14:19:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/technopolis-group.com\/africas-fourth-industrial-revolution\/"},"modified":"2020-05-05T05:52:09","modified_gmt":"2020-05-05T05:52:09","slug":"africas-fourth-industrial-revolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/technopolis-group.com\/es\/africas-fourth-industrial-revolution\/","title":{"rendered":"Africa\u2019s Fourth Industrial Revolution"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>The African Development Bank commissioned Technopolis Group to assess how the technologies relating to the Fourth Industrial Revolution may help to tackle socio-economic and environmental challenges of the African continent and provide detailed recommendations about how African governments can take advantage of it. <\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The subsequent project* that was developed for\nthis purpose carried out a six-month assessment to see if there is a business\ncase for large-scale adoption of the new technologies on the African continent.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But many people \u2013 in Africa as well as Europe \u2013\nhave not heard of the fourth industrial revolution. It is often described\nagainst the background of the first three\nindustrial revolutions (the first one was powered by steam, the second by\nelectricity and the third by the internet). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2016\/01\/the-fourth-industrial-revolution-what-it-means-and-how-to-respond\/\">this article<\/a> by Klaus Schwab on the World Economic Forum\u2019s website, the fourth industrial revolution is a \u201cfusion of new technologies\u201d which is \u201cevolving at an exponential rate\u201d and is \u201cdisrupting every industry in every country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Essentially it is building\non all existing technologies with new digital tools like artificial intelligence,\nrobotics, 3D printing and blockchain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These technologies are\nchanging everything \u2013 our economies as well as the way we live \u2013 and the\nAfrican Development Bank wanted an African reflection on this issue as they\nwill send a signal to all African governments, and their partners, to highlight\nthe importance of this economic opportunity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The African leapfrog<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>But how can Africa compete\nwhen its infrastructure is so unreliable? This is a good question but with\nthese new \u201cdisruptive\u201d technologies it may not be that relevant. In the old\ndays, countries developed incrementally; they gradually built up on the back of\nnetworks that supplied people with electricity, phones, roads, health and\neducational services. The availability of information online means Africans can\nbe as up to date about new developments as their counterparts in the EU and\nUSA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The concept of leapfrogging is often discussed in Africa \u2013 jumping those incremental stages of development that Western European nations used as building blocks. But, to do this, we must have the right policies and incentives in place.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many useful\nexamples of African entrepreneurs using drones to set up new businesses in agriculture,\nconstruction and public utilities. Drones are being used to help farmers\nmonitor their fields, as well as assist public utility companies to check their\nlong-distance power lines. Unfortunately, some governments are restricting the\nuse of drones, such as Nigeria, for military reasons, and Cameroon and it is\nimportant that this new technology is seen as an opportunity and not a threat.\nThis will involve recognition of the security risks and appropriate regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Technopolis Group project<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Technopolis\nGroup was commissioned by the African Development Bank to publish a detailed report\non the principal new technologies including AI (Artificial Intelligence), IoT\n(Internet of Things), Blockchain, VR (Virtual Reality), 3D printing and Big Data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on\nextensive research, the report highlights the ways these technologies are\ncurrently being used (or could be used) in Africa and determines the business\ncase for a local supply of these emerging technologies and their adoption in\nthe overall economy of the continent.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\noverall goal of the report is to provide a rationale why certain technologies\nshould be adopted in Africa \u2013 and to outline a development strategy for African\ngovernments, the private sector and development partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the key recommendations for African policymakers and regulators made by Technopolis to unlock the potential of the Fourth Industrial Revolution for Africa include: developing a united vision to seize the opportunities of the 4IR; at national level, creating incentives (financial, fiscal) for technology adoption in national priority sectors (e.g. agriculture and energy); starting to prepare the next generation Africa 4.0 workforce; Redesigning existing governance institutions to better prepare for challenges posed by data circulation, developing collaborative and adaptive; and nurturing inclusive institutions favouring and promoting widespread innovation to adopt 4IR technologies in production and service sectors regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/technopolis-group.com\/es\/report\/potential-of-the-fourth-industrial-revolution-in-africa\/\">Read our full report on the potential of the fourth industrial revolution in Africa.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The African Development Bank commissioned Technopolis Group to assess how [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[8,236],"tags":[],"solution":[],"sector":[103,105],"class_list":["post-18725","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-sin-categorizar","category-technopolitan-es","sector-digitalisation-es","sector-international-coop-es"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.1.1 -
