The EU Commission published its recommendations for the EU\u2019s 2040 climate targets on Tuesday, February 6th, 2024, advocating for a 90% net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction by 2040 compared to 1990 levels. The recommendations are derived from an impact assessment and are intended to serve as a basis for the further discussions with stakeholders on the 2040 climate targets. A legislative proposal for the 2040 climate targets is planned to be prepared by the next Commission, after the European elections in June 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The communication also involves a number of enabling policy conditions which are necessary to achieve the net reduction target of 90% in 2040. Notably, the impact assessment indicates that the level of remaining EU GHG emissions in 2040 should be less than 850 MtCO2-eq and carbon removals (land-based and industrial removals) should reach up to 400 MtCO2. Thus, the recommended target requires both strong emissions reductions and the scale-up of carbon removals until 2040. Technopolis, in collaboration with its partners COWI, Eunomia, and Arctik, provided support to the EU Commission in the activities related to the public consultation on the EU climate targets for 2040. The public consultation informed the impact assessment, which is now the foundation for the recommendations of the EU Commission. The analyses conducted by Technopolis and its partners involved the analysis of responses to the public consultation questionnaire, an analysis of the submitted position papers, and support in the organisation of a stakeholder event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
