The aim of this study is to develop an updated definition of key enabling technologies based on analyses of international discourses and dynamics, specific national approaches to key enabling technologies and the framework conditions in Austria, and to show in which context there is a need for knowledge for classification and measurement in order to develop meaningful and compatible indicators and metrics for key enabling technologies in Austria. In addition, recommendations were made for the promotion of key enabling technologies in the context of Austrian RTI policy.
