One of the European Commission\u2019s main priorities is to\nimprove the prevention, treatment and care for cancer as set out in <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_21_342\">Europe\u2019s\nBeating Cancer Plan<\/a>. Actions within this plan concern initiatives to\nimprove access to innovative cancer diagnoses and treatments as provided by\nnuclear medicine. Medical radioisotopes are essential for the provision of\nthese diagnoses and treatments. To ensure and improve the prevention and\ntreatment of cancer in Europe it is therefore essential to have a sustainable\nand resilient supply of medical radioisotopes in the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The JRC asked Technopolis Group to study\nthe supply, use and demand of therapeutic radioisotopes in the EU. Radioisotope\nuse for therapy is currently small compared to the use for diagnosis, therefore\nlittle insights were available on the market for therapeutic radionuclides. It\nis however a market that is growing fast with many innovations in the past few\nyears, in a field that is promising for the treatment of cancer and other diseases.\nOur study has contributed to improved insights for policymakers on the\npotential and concerns of this market for the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some key <strong>conclusions<\/strong> of our study\nare:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The demand for several therapeutic\nradionuclides is expected to increase strongly in the next 10 years, especially\nfor 177-Lutetium.<\/li><li>Most therapeutic radionuclides are\nmost effectively produced using nuclear reactors, only a few can be produced\n(effectively) with accelerators.<\/li><li>Europe has currently multiple local\nsuppliers for most therapeutic radionuclides that are commonly used, but these\nare supplied by seven ageing research reactors.<\/li><li>In less than 20 years five of these\nresearch reactors will stop operations with uncertain plans for new build to\nreplace or increase this capacity.<\/li><li>The current production capacity for\ntherapeutic radionuclides seems adequate for meeting current demand but is\nfragile. <\/li><li>Current production capacity is not\nconsidered resilient and cannot sustain the overall projected demand growth for\ntherapeutic radionuclides.<\/li><li>Foreign (non-EU) dependencies exist\nin the supply chain regarding the enrichment of lowly enriched Uranium and\nstable isotopes (esp. 176-Ytterbium). The ageing European reactor fleet could\nincrease foreign dependency for irradiation capacity.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some key <strong>recommendations<\/strong> of our\nstudy are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Concerted and urgent action of\nMember States at EU level is needed to secure sufficient irradiation capacity\nfor therapeutics radionuclides in Europe in the future.<\/li><li>One should decide politically\nwhether Europe wants to be self-sufficient in enrichment to produce target\nmaterials and research reactor fuel.<\/li><li>The EC should consider supporting\npublic-private R&amp;I to strengthen future supply chain for therapeutic\nradionuclides.<\/li><li>Actors in the supply chain should\nwiden information-sharing regarding supply capacities, new builds, demand\nexpectations and outages for key therapeutic radionuclides.<\/li><li>Member States, together with the EC,\nshould improve standardised national data collection on the use of\nradiopharmaceuticals.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Read our full report for all our findings, conclusions and recommendations and to get a deep understanding of the use, demand and supply of medical radioisotopes in the EU. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"template":"","solution":[109],"sector":[69],"class_list":["post-33175","report","type-report","status-publish","hentry","solution-strategic-studies-nl","sector-health-life-sciences-nl"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.1.1 -
