Current trends in the use of research information systems at institutional, national and European level, are creating the opportunity to develop a European research information infrastructure that could provide the basis for improved research policy development in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These trends are rooted in the desire for better evidence for public management, growing demands for open access to the results of publicly funded research and a need for a more integrated way to understand research performance as well as its efficiency and effects. They are important both at the national level and in the development of the European Research Area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These are the findings of a study conducted for the Science and Technology Options Assessment office of the European Parliament. The study identifies research policy options for developing a transnational European research information system collecting and monitoring research performance data and assesses the usefulness and desirability of such a system. In the first instance, its scope would be European but the study also considers how European efforts could be linked to more global ones.
