Innovation policy has never been only about growth. It has always been connected to broader economic, industrial, strategic, and societal priorities. Today, these objectives are intersecting in new and more urgent ways, with critical technologies central to competitiveness, security policy, strategic autonomy, and the ability to address societal challenges. In many cases, the same technologies underpin both defence capabilities and wider economic and societal innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Governments therefore face a more complex set of choices. They need to understand where technological strengths and dependencies lie, how to mitigate emerging security risks, how to enable responsible innovation, and how to strengthen strategic autonomy without undermining openness, collaboration and competitiveness. Whether in renewable energy, semiconductors, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, space or dual-use technologies, policymakers need to assess technological opportunities, dependencies, and risks together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Building on our in-depth knowledge of the science, technology and innovation (STI) domain, Technopolis Group supports policymakers at European, national and regional levels at the intersection of security, industry and STI policy. We help them address complex challenges and ongoing developments, including the prioritisation of R&D investments in areas such as cybersecurity as well as studies and advice on how to address research security challenges. Our experience spans evaluations and studies for national cyber security agencies, work on European research security initiatives and we recently signed in collaboration with our partner 4CF a framework contract on the topic of technology trend analysis with the European Defence Agency. We also support work on industrial resilience and autonomy, including through initiatives such as the European Monitoring of Industrial Ecosystems, and advise numerous regions across Europe on next-generation Smart Specialisation Strategies, where questions of industrial sovereignty, autonomy, security and defence are increasingly high on the agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
