Technopolis Group has used machine-reading algorithms to classify and analyse text in a huge dataset \u2014 with the aim of illustrating the landscape of research collaborations between universities and companies in the UK. <\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

As\npart of the 2015 Dowling Review of research collaboration between universities\nand the private sector, the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) explored different\nways to illustrate these collaborations in the UK. Technopolis Group was\ncommissioned to build on prior work \u2014 for the RAEng and the Engineering and Physical\nSciences Research Council (ESPRC) \u2014 which tested a new approach to obtaining\ncompany mentions from unstructured text information. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our\nsource of information was a database of 6,642 impact case studies submitted in\nthe UK\u2019s latest Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercise, in which\nuniversities describe the impact of their research and their different networks\nand collaborations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information contained in these impact case studies amounts to 10,200 full pages of written text. This called for the use of automated machine-reading techniques. We used the latest version of the Name Entity Recognition (NER) classifier published by the Stanford Natural Language Processing Group. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tagging and classifying <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NER\nalgorithms take text and tag it with specific metadata, locating and\nclassifying expressions into different sets of predefined categories or\nentities. Some of these algorithms are pre-trained with large volumes of\ntextual data and use advanced techniques to detect names in the text and\nclassify them by type of entity. Using a 3-class model for English language, the\nNER classifier tags organisations, locations and personal names present in a\ntext. As is usually the case when using these types of \u2018big data\u2019 techniques,\nsome old fashioned manual cleaning was also put in place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nfinal result is a simple but quite powerful set of word clouds identifying the\ncompanies that interact the most with universities \u2014 or are mentioned the most\nby universities \u2014 in the UK.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
