Kalle Nielsen is a senior consultant at Technopolis Group with over 10 years of experience working on STI policy.  Kalle has professional experience in policy analysis and evaluation of research and innovation policies and programmes with particular focus on internationalisation, European and global collaboration as well as comparative analysis of national research and innovation systems and policies. 

Kalle is an experienced consultant and project manager and recently led studies on the Role of EU Funding for UK Research and Innovation for the UK National Academies and on the Drivers and Barriers of International Engagement for the Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). His work has covered S&I policies in a large number of countries world-wide on topics such as internationalisation, performance-based funding, challenge-led research programmes, the impact of research, knowledge transfer and university-business collaboration, and infrastructure support. Kalle has also contributed to studies on national schemes to promote participation in EU programmes and evaluations of EU programmes and initiatives, most recently the European Social Survey (ESS).

Prior to joining Technopolis Group, Kalle worked as a doctoral researcher at the Manchester Institute of Innovation Research (MIoIR). His doctoral research focussed on European collaboration between national research funding agencies and he worked as a researcher on projects on joint and open programmes in Europe (JOREP), the impact of the European Research Council (ERC) and responsible research and innovation (RRI), among others. He was a member of staff in the European Commission (2006-2008), working on issues related to the European Research Area and has later acted as rapporteur.

Kalle is trained in qualitative research and evaluation methods and is an experienced user of software tools for qualitative analysis (NVivo). He holds a BSc degree in Political Science from the University of Copenhagen, a master’s degree in European Affairs from the Institute of Political Studies in Paris (SciencesPo) and a PhD degree in Management of Science, Technology & Innovation from the University of Manchester. Kalle is a Danish national and is fully fluent in Danish, English and French, understands Norwegian and Swedish, and has some knowledge of German and Mandarin Chinese.
