Universities have always been a source for innovation and new ideas in education, research and innovation. However, in the current volatile environment, higher education institutions have an even more urgent need for internal innovation – for example on new ways for preparing the next generation of students and contributing to solving societal challenges. 

Yesterday, Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft – a prominent network of stakeholders in business, science, politics and civil society and highly visible advocacy organisation in German research, education and innovation policy – ‘New forms of tertiary education – Innovative future concepts for higher education and what we can learn from them’.  This international exploratory study was carried out as part of Future Mission Education of Stifterverband, co-funded by Heinz-Nixdorf Stiftung and supported by Technopolis Group.

Mapping the future of education  

The exploratory study presents both national and international examples of innovative higher education models. It systematises their effectiveness and success criteria and analyses their potential for broader application in Germany.  

From October 2023 until June 2024, Technopolis Group worked with universities and experts to implement the study. Seven outstanding case studies were selected, and four central challenges were focused:   

he case studies show levers for overcoming these four systemic challenges and making universities fit for future.
