Technopolis Germany has been commissioned by the Panel for the Future of Science and Technology (STOA) of the European Parliament to conduct a study on the threats posed by new and emerging plant pests.
The study examines how climate change and global trade increase risks for agriculture, food security, and the economy in the EU, and explores the scientific, technological, and policy options available and required by 2050 to effectively prevent and manage outbreaks.
Project Objectives
- Provide an overview of the risks and impacts of new plant pests and the technologies for early detection, monitoring, and management.
- Develop future scenarios up to 2050 to understand risks and identify necessary actions.
- Derive policy options for prevention, early detection, and control in order to support EU policy, particularly regarding the Common Agricultural Policy after 2027 and the One Health approach.
The study is intended for Members of the European Parliament and the STOA Panel, EU institutions and national ministries and authorities, as well as professionals in agriculture, plant health, and the bioeconomy.
