James Bates joined Technopolis’ UK Health Team as a consultant in June 2024. James has developed his science policy research skills through multiple study, research and consulting positions. Recently he has focused on interdiciplinary biomedical research evaluation, and regulatory affairs of In-Vitro Diagnostic Medical Devices. He has contributed to life sciences research projects funded in the UK and internationally, employing a range of research methodologies including interviews, surveys, case studies, desk research, literature reviews, and network analysis.

Recently James has been working closely with the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics as a regulatory affairs consultant, taking part in projects supporting access to diagnostics in LMICs, as well as market landscaping activities and regulatory and procurement strategies. He has also provided project management support to these projects and the Regulatory Unit at FIND.

James completed a MSc in Science and Technology Policy from the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at the University of Sussex, with his dissertation analysing the UK funding landscape for biomedical translational research. After supporting the UK’s COVID-19 response processing PCR tests, James took a research assistant position at SPRU in an international comparative study of COVID-19 diagnostics in response to the global pandemic.

Before his MSc, James completed an undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences, also at the University of Sussex, informing on a range of biomedical topics across developmental biology, neuroscience, and cancer. He is fluent in English and is an intermediate Spanish speaker.
