Mapping & Analysing European Research and Technology Infrastructures for Advanced Materials Uptake

This report presents the results of the study “Uptake of Advanced Materials,” which provides a comprehensive mapping and analysis of the European landscape of Research and Technology Infrastructures (RI&TIs) focused on Advanced Materials. It builds on the European Strategy for Research and Technology Infrastructures and contributes to the preparatory work for the forthcoming Advanced Materials Act. The study identifies 2,943 AdMa RI&TIs across the EU, with Technology Infrastructures concentrated primarily in Western and Southern Europe, and oriented towards electronics, energy and mobility sectors. The EU’s AdMa RI&TI landscape is benchmarked against infrastructures in Japan, the UK, and the US. In the EU, AdMa RI&TIs operate under diverse business models spanning the full TRL spectrum, offering services that extend beyond technological support. However, a number of structural gaps constrain the capacity of AdMa RI&TIs. Cross-border collaboration and industrial access remain limited in practice, hindered by fragmented funding landscapes, state aid constraints, administrative complexity and limited visibility of available capabilities, particularly affecting SMEs. The study’s main recommendations include strengthening cross-infrastructure collaboration, notably with OITBs and EDIHs, and improving access conditions for SMEs through voucher schemes and targeted outreach, and developing a sustainable single-entry catalogue to enhance the visibility of the TI landscape. The study provides guidance for the development of this catalogue as a user-friendly, web-based platform with standardised service descriptions, intuitive filtering and a mixed funding model combining EU support with a gradual transition towards private revenue streams.
