Technopolis Group

Intellectual Property & Standards

In many industries, intellectual property rights (IPR) and standards have become essential building blocks for innovations. The European Patent Office (EPO) and United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) see more and more patents filed as IP and standards become more broadly used across industries. That is why Technopolis has established a dedicated IP and standards team, which pools more than 20 years of expertise, and covers the whole range of IP instruments and fields. We can offer expertise on formal IP protections, such as patents, copyrights, designs and trademarks, as well as informal protection mechanisms, such as trade secrets and defensive publishing.

IPS team operates at the interface of innovation policy and IPR and standards policy.  We provide independent, evidence-based insights, advice to help policymakers:

We can also provide insight on industry specific IPS issues, such as in the life sciences, green technologies or ICT. We rely on a network of contacts at leading legal institutions to support our activities when necessary.

We support clients in high-income countries as well as in developing countries, where we help analyse IP issues, draft IP strategies and support capacity building. We work for international organisations such as the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the European Commission, the European Parliament, the EPO or the Multilateral Development Banks, as well as a range of national IP offices and funding agencies or ministries dealing with IP or standards issues, standard-developing organisations like CEN or DIN, and individual research organisations and their technology transfer offices.

Our work covers the whole range of IP instruments and fields. We can offer expertise on formal IP protections, such as patents, copyrights, designs and trademarks, as well as informal protection mechanisms, such as trade secrets and defensive publishing. We often work at the intersection of IPS with other domains, such as IPS in open innovation and collaboration.  We can also provide insight into industry-specific IPS issues, such as in the life sciences, green technologies or ICT.
